Next River City Boat Club General Meeting, 11:00 a.m., Saturday March 20, 2010
The March general meeting will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at the Past Commodores’ Cruise at Dolphin Yacht Club.
Past Commodores’ Cruise to Dolphin Yacht Club, Camas/Washougal, March 19-21.
This special annual cruise is hosted by the Past Commodores. Their club-furnished entree for Saturday night is prime rib. Al and Sharon Clute will host the Sunday breakfast. (Since this particular cruise through the years has included Sunday breakfast by Al and Sharon, this reporter is assuming it is again to celebrate their wedding anniversary.)

Fleet Captain Brian Norske has asked for a response from club members by Tuesday afternoon, so Tuesday at 5 p.m. he can get out the final list of who is coming, what each is bringing to supplement the Saturday prime rib dinner, and to supplement the Sunday breakfast by the Clutes. The list also includes whether arriving by boat or by car (or RV).

There will be a book exchange on Saturday—Jim and Aileen Lee have a bag full of books they are bringing. This is starting to be another annual affair.
Some notes from Brian’s messages—Boats will be moored at the Camas/Washougal dock. There is NOT electricity available on the dock, as the dock rebuilding/renovation is behind schedule. We will meet for the cruise at the Dolphin YC clubhouse and can meet inside or out—“the outside patio is a great place to chat, share snacks, and watch the river.”

Highlights of Recent River City Boat Club Events
Polar Bear Cruise to Hadley’s Landing, February 19-21 (Thank you Judi Matheis!)
“It appears that we may have to change the name of the Polar Bear cruise since the past few years it has been anything but cold! Honest Al brought out his thermometer and it showed low 80’s. The Clutes and Matheis arrived on Thursday with Sharon and Judi rummaging through their arsenal of clothes to find something cool to wear.
Friday we all went for a walk, then Ron and Al played a round of horseshoes for which Al won by one point. Later that day the Meyers, Querys and Bruce arrived. That night we all hung out on the Querys’ boat where it was nice and warm.
Saturday, the Regans and Beutlers arrived. Those who had their dinghies took a short cruise. Later Brian and Judy and Kim arrived by dinghy and Mark and Dixie arrived on foot. Also present were Milo and Trink, Vinnie and Rosie, Allie, Rex, Reese and Miss Abby, Kula, and Bailey. (Unfortunately, Lucky passed away the week before—he will be missed.)
We were all looking forward to seeing Jim and Aileen since they haven’t been able to attend much during this past year due to needed repairs on their boat. Shortly after they left their moorage they began having trouble with their steering and called for help. Al Query and Andy went to their rescue but the only thing they were able to do was help them back to a dock where they could wait for further repairs.
Saturday some people went for a stroll while others visited on the dock, enjoying the warm weather. That night everyone returned to the Querys’ boat for warmth and conversation. For the Querys the warmth was short lived, their furnace stopped working during the night and they woke to 45 degrees. The Regans also woke to frost on their windows. We might have had warm weather during the days but it got pretty cold during the night.
One by one, everyone left on Sunday morning, returning to their moorage, and looking forward to our next cruise.”
Commodore’s Ball, February 24, at Colwood Golf Club

The River City Boat Club 2010 Commodore’s Ball, in honor of Commodore Andy Meyer and First Mate Nancy Meyer, was an evening of good food, conversation, and entertainment. Nearly all the River City Boat Club members were in attendance. Also, prior members Rand and Kathy Robinson, Roger and Judy Crystal, and Bill and Maurine Otos attended. It was great seeing them!

The tables and podium were decorated with pieces of fabric with the design of many nautical flags (this appeared to be the same as on the invitations). The certerpieces also included a clever decoration—it was a clear glass with a candle in the bottom that was covered with many turquoise oval pieces of plastic. The glass was set on a base of circled nautical rope. Rope was also tied around the center of the glass.

The 2009 year’s awards were presented—Skipper of the Year went to Andy Meyer, First Mate of the Year to Nancy Meyer, and Commodore’s Award to Andy Meyer.
Commdore Andy Meyer gave a speech. He said a goal for the year will be to have a special activity at each cruise. He welcomed Brian Norske back into the River City Boat Club and especially to his 2010 role as Fleet Captain. Andy also has a goal of five new families into the RCBC this year.

Brian Norske also gave a speech. He said the River City Boat Club has a Bent Prop Award, a Pink Snorkel Award, and now a Paddle Oar Award. The Fleet Captain will have the final judgement for the Paddle Oar Award.
The special entertainer was Russ Peak, an award-winning member of the Society of American Magicians and a favorite of TV and Hollywood’s Magic Castle. Russ Peak’s postcard says his presentations are guaranteed to be high-energy, full of audience participation, and packed with laughs. This is all true. Everyone enjoyed his presentations.

Wendell took many pictures, especially for the website and for the club yearbook.

Although the official evening was over following Russ Peak’s presentations, many stayed for awhile talking. It was a fun and entertaining evening—Thank you Carole Regan for all your hard work to make the evening a fun one to remember.
Thank you Al Query and Andy Meyer for coming to the rescue of Tall Tales2 on Friday, February 19.
First Mate Aileen Lee did not realize how much trouble Tall Tales2 was in until she heard Jim yell out we needed help. Aileen got on the phone and called about four or five of the RCBC men. No answers. Then she tried Nancy Meyer, and heard, “help is coming.” Al Query and Andy Meyer soon came in their dinghies. Aileen did not realize Jim had already called the Coast Guard. Soon Vessel Assist also came. They arrived about the time Al and Andy were pulling Tall Tales2 into a dock. Al and Andy went down into the engines space and tried to fix whatever was wrong. (Vessel Assist hung around for awhile, but actually did not assist with anything.) Al and Andy finally gave up and Jim drove Tall Tales2 on one engine to the inside ramp at Big Oak so that Channel Marine could check for the problem. Al Query followed along to Big Oak to help dock Tall Tales2 while Andy tied his dinghy on and rode with Jim to Big Oak. Once docked at Big Oak, Andy took Jim back to his moorage so he could get his van. After Jim drove the van to Big Oak he was able to get the other engine started. He then realised Al and Andy had gotten the problem fixed. Channel Marine on Monday checked out for problems and found nothing and moved Tall Tales2 back to its moorage.
