The Next River City Boat Club General Meetings

The September RCBC general meeting will be a short meeting held this Saturday (September 4), on the dock at the Sand Island part of the Down River Cruise. The September 22, the fourth Wednesday, at Buffalo Gap Saloon & Eatery, has been cancelled due to several members being out of town.

The October RCBC general meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 13, the second Wednesday, at the Attic at Buffalo Gap Saloon & Eatery, 6835 SW Macadam Avenue. The Social half-hour is at 6:30 p.m. and dinner and the meeting at 7:00 p.m. The Nominating Committee report will be given at the October 13 meeting.

Cruise to Sand Island part of Down River Cruise, September 3 to 6, 2010

This River City Boat Club Labor Day Weekend Cruise has two hosted nights. Saturday night will be hosted by Ron & Judi Matheis. They plan on tacos for the club-furnished entrée. They also plan on an activity—a bean bag softball game. Sunday night will be hosted by Andy & Nancy Meyer. They plan on pasta for the club-furnished entrée.

Another hosted meal has been added for those who are going Down River on Monday. Mark and Dixie McNamara are planning on barbecuing “World Famous Burgers” in Cathlamet. Sounds like this hosted meal will be Monday night. This could change to Tuesday depending when the boats arrive at Cathlamet. Mark and Dixie are calling this event a “hoe down.” For more info on that part of the cruise, contact Mark and Dixie.

Cruise to Coon Island, West Dock, July 23-25, 2010

August 13-15, 2010, Cruise to North Portland Harbor

This is now a hosted cruise, an “anchor-out cruise” in the North Portland Harbor. Watch for more info regarding this cruise from Fleet Captain Brian Norske and in the next Searayder.

HIGHLIGHTS OF A RECENT RIVER CITY BOAT CLUB EVENT

Highlights of Cruise to Beacon Rock State Park, July 2-5, 2010

Arriving by motorhome Thursday night, July 1, Jim and Aileen Lee & dog Klondike checked the two campsites at the top of the ramp at Beacon Rock State Park. These campsites were already filled so they headed for the park’s new 5-space campsite Al Clute had called earlier that day to tell the Lees about and to say that two of the five spaces were still open. And, they were still open when the Lees arrived! Al & Sharon Clute were there talking to Sharon’s brother Jerry Stricklie who was camped there in his Big Foot camper. We heard there were three boats at the Beacon Rock State Park dock—besides Mosey Cat with Al & Sharon Clute & their two cats Milo, and Trink, there was Prime Mover with Al & Denise Query, and The Blessing with Barrett Coughlan & Marilyn Town.

Arriving by boat Friday were Reflections with Mark & Mary Beutler & dogs Reese, Rex, & Miss Abbie, and Misdirection with Bill & Carole Regan & dog Allie. Arriving by boat Saturday was Valhalla with Doug & Teri Brown. Driving Saturday were Andy Meyer, Brian Norske, and Wendel. Arriving Sunday was R-Prescription with Dan, Jen, & William Query.

Thursday night Jim & Aileen talked with Sharon and her brother Jerry for awhile. On the way to the campsite, they had been met on the road by a character acting like he was hitching a ride. Turned out to be Al Clute! Friday morning (or Saturday morning) Sharon & Al were treated by Sharon’s brother, just outside of Jerry’s camper, to a breakfast of waffles and sausage!

Thursday was light rain. Friday the sun was out by noon. The trains came by about every half hour. Denise walked Klondike. Klondike jumped around in the water, having a good time. Mark put his dinghy in, helped by dogs Reese and Rex and later by Al Clute. This was the entertainment of the day for those on the dock. Friday night the trains came by about every 15 minutes and didn’t stop until about 10 p.m. or so.

Saturday by noon all were on the dock. Andy and Wendell and Brian had arrived. Andy and Jim walked Klondike. Sharon donned a life jacket and decorated Mosey Cat with lights and flags and banners in red, white, and blue. Brian kept shedding his shirt and putting it back on as the sun came and went. Hors d’oeuvres of all kinds were put out about 1:30 p.m. for a great feast. Denise walked Klondike again. Mostly those left on the dock were the men talking. Doug & Teri Brown arrived about 3:30 p.m. Wendell had said he would climb The Rock, but got no takers. Everyone seemed content just to look up at The Rock for anyone who might be climbing it!

Earlier the Skamania Sheriff’s boat took off with flashing lights on. Later one of our members reported seeing a body bag and a hearse. Perhaps this will make the news later. (This reporter did look in The Register-Guard, the Eugene paper, but saw nothing about this.)

Saturday night the club furnished entrée for dinner was pork ribs, prepared by Costco and heated up in the barbecues by The Hosts, Al & Sharon Clute. This wonderful meat was supplemented by excellent potluck dishes and a tasty, fancy dessert made by Marilyn.

Allie (Bill & Carole’s dog) leaped up on Wendell. Later Wendell had Allie and Reese & Rex running up and down the dock, until Wendell got tripped up by one of them.

Sunday Jim & Aileen moved the motorhome down to the parking spaces above the ramp to the dock since they were headed home after dinner Sunday night. Sunday was a lazy day. One had to search for blue sky and it was windy. Jackets were put back on. Teri was doing needlework. Carole was reading a book. The Blessing left about 12:30 p.m.. Hors d’oeuvres were put out at 1:30 p.m. It was still cool. Mark & Mary & Reese and Rex were out for a dinghy ride. Bill & Carole & Allie were out for a dog walk. The sun tried to shine and about 3:45 p.m. there was a little bit of blue sky although it was still not really warm.

Sunday night the club furnished entrée was steak, with everyone cooking their own. Some were lucky to have those more experienced cook theirs for them. The steaks were supplemented by the usual tasty potluck items.

For the Lees in their motorhome, the scenery on the drive on highway 14 to the bridge across the Columbia was beautiful and the drive down I-205 was uneventful. The traffic was so much better than expected, and what a change from Thursday!!!! There were fireworks in the distance all along the way in the towns along I-5–very nice. This was a wonderful end to a fun cruise!!!! (Only wished we could have taken a boat!!!!)

The July River City Boat Club General Meeting

The July River City Boat Club General Meeting has been cancelled. The next meeting will be proably be held on Wednesday, September 22, the third Wednesday. Check a future Searayder for the location and confirmation of the date of the meeting..

Cruise to Beacon Rock State Park, July 2-5, 2010

Cruise hosts for Saturday night are Al & Sharon Clute. They plan on ribs for the club-furnished entrée for Saturday night. If the cruise does include Monday, July 5, Sunday night July 4 may be club-furnished steaks, but “cook your own”.

There will be the bag of books for a book exchange.

Activities at this cruise always includes a climb of Beacon Rock for those who are up to this activity. Someone who is driving to Beacon Rock might be enticed to drive some climbers to the start of the climb of the Rock.
According to Brian’s June 26 E-mail, he says the cruise is from July 2 until maybe the July 5, since some people have Monday off. He talks about some people driving up to Beacon Rock since there is a campground there with spaces for RV’s. tents, etc. Lasting until July 5 sounds great, as then one probably doesn’t have to worry as much about fireworks in the sky when one has their pet along. The camping area at Beacon Rock State Park at the top of the ramp from the dock last year had only two campsites and am not sure if there is a campground across the road. There was no parking overnight just above the ramp other than the two campsites. There is an RV park called Lewis & Clark RV Park, just east of Beacon Rock, across from Beacon Rock Golf Course. Last year there were fireworks at the entrance to the RV Park on Friday night, but that didn’t bother Klondike even though his head was out the window.

A word of caution if you bring your boat, last year osprey birds had nests on top of the posts at the dock and it was later discovered why one should not dock near the nests—watch out for osprey droppings on your boat!

Hope you have already contacted Fleet Captain Brian Norske with your details about the cruise. It is always a fun place to have a cruise—hope to see you there!

HIGHLIGHTS OF A RECENT RIVER CITY BOAT CLUB EVENT

Highlights of Cruise to St. Helens City Dock, April 16-18, 2010

Arriving Thursday by boat was Mosey Cat with Al & Sharon Clute with cat Milo (joining them for part of the cruise were their daughter Tami and granddaughter Heidi). Arriving Friday by boat was Andy & Nancy Meyer with dogs Vinny & Rosie. Prime Mover arrived Friday with Al & Denise Query. Also, Capt. Ron with Ron & Judi Matheis arrived Friday. (Surprised to see their boat is for sale!) Reflections arrived Friday with Mark & Mary Beutler and their three dogs, Reese, Rex, and Miss Abbie. Also arriving Friday was Sound of Music with Bruce Kern. The St. Helens City Dock Cruise was a relaxed cruise with some arriving by boat and some driving. Friday night Jim & Aileen Lee & dog Klondike arrived by motorhome. Arriving by boat Saturday was Misdirection with Bill & Carole Regan with dog Allie. Driving Saturday was Fleet Captain Brian Norske, Barret Coughlan & Marilyn Town, Doug & Teri Brown, and Wendell. Friday night a group went to the Klondike for dinner, including the Clutes, Meyers, Beutlers, Querys, and Lees. Rich & Ann Mason walked over on Friday in time to join everyone at the Klondike for dinner. Friday night cat Milo was enjoying the back of Mosey Cat. Friday night many fishermen were on the Columbia River and seen bringing in salmon.

Friday Mark B. was fishing in his dinghy, but no fish. Andy & Jim Lee were out in the Andy’s dinghy.

Saturday, Mark B. was fishing, but got none. (Sunday was the last day to fish.)

Hors d’oeuvres were put out at 1 p.m.

Bill and Carole arrived about 1 p.m. and headed for the stores where they bought out the jewelry.

Books for the book exchange were put out. The dogs enjoyed lying around on the dock.

Wendell, Jim Lee, and Al Query were on Prime Mover talking about engines.

By 4:30 p.m. there was sun, clouds, blue sky, and even some dark clouds.

Bruce Kern was the day’s host and fixed hamburgers for all. He had assistance from some of the men. (Kim couldn’t attend the cruise as she was home sick.) The potlucked food was good as always, as were the hamburgers.

Denise acquired a new title this weekend. She became the RCBC Dog Walker, walking Klondike, Allie, and perhaps others. Klondike managed to find kids and some adults to get petted and to lick their hands.

The weather varied from wind, sun, rain (mostly sprinkles but enouigh to put up the tarp).

Sunday morning a group went out for breakfast. The dinghies were in use. Mark B. tried fishing again. Rich Mason came by in his dinghy. Andy and Jim Lee were out dinghying . They stopped to watch four eagles, and osprey, and cormorants. Everyone had their dinghies loaded and were ready to leave by 3:40 p.m. By 5 p.m. all had left for their own moorages. It was the end of another fun cruise.

The July River City Boat Club General Meeting

The July River City Boat Club General Meeting will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, at the Beacon Rock Cruise. Watch for the next Searayder for details of the Beacon Rock Cruise.

Cruise to Government Island, Schwitter Landing, June 18-20, 2010

According to Fleet Captain Brian Norske’s June 10 E-mail, he still needs a host for this hosted cruise. Also, let Brian know whether or not you are going to attend the cruise, and if you plan to attend, when you plan to arrive, how many will be attending, and what potluck item you will be bringing for Saturday night.

From Brian’s E-mail, “Schwitter Landing is just upstream from the I-205 Bridge. It is between the I-205 Bridge and the West Dock at Government Island. The docks are almost new and are in good shape. There is access to the shore via a headwalk.”

Brian’s final cruise notice will go out Wednesday night.

Hopefully, the weather will be good for this fun cruise. (The Eugene’s forecast for Friday is Mostly Sunny and 73 and for Saturday Sunny and 73. The Portland area seems to be similar to Eugene.)

Past Commodores’ Cruise to Dolphin Yacht Club, at Camas/Washougal, March 19-21, (Thank you Judi Matheis!)

The March 19-21 Past Commodores Cruise was held at the Dolphin Yacht Club.

Arriving by boat Friday were Al & Sharon and Al & Denise. Arriving by RV were Pat & Deb and Ron & Judi. Most had dinner at the Puffin after spending an enjoyable afternoon on the Querys’ boat.

Saturday arriving by RV were John & Linda, Jim & Nikki, and Mark & Mary, completing the River City Motor Yacht Club. Arriving by land were Andy & Nancy, Bill & Carole, Brian & Judy, Mark & Dixie, Barrett & Marilyn, Doug & Terry, Wendell, and as a surprise, guest Tim Fisher.

At 11:00 a.m., Andy held a general meeting where it was decided we would be participating in Opening Day on the water, staying at Tomahawk Marina. Guest moorage is $25.00 per night and those planning on attending need to contact Andy ASAP so he can arrange moorage for members. Those who already told Andy they would be there Opening Day with their boat, don’t need to contact Andy again.

Hors d’oeuvres were served at 2:00 p.m. where everyone had a chance to catch up with current events and also what Tim Fisher has been doing.

As usual, Al & Sharon Clute did a wonderfull job preparing the prime rib, and all the accompanying dishes were delicious as well. As the night went on and the conversation dwindled, everyone returned to their homes, whether it be boat, RV, or house.

On Sunday, Al & Sharon treated everyone to French toast. Pat contributed his special biscuits and gravy, with everyone else contributing their special treats to complete a yummy breakfast. Those attending the breakfast were Al & Sharon, Al & Denise, Jim & Nikki, John & Linda, Ron & Judi, Mark & Mary, Pat & Deb, Andy & Nancy, Bill & Carole, Brian & Judy, and special guest Harvey.

Harvey joined as a social member. Brian awarded John Grow the first OOPS “Oar of Perpetual Shame” award for bending the awning arms on the silver streak. Slowly everyone returned home, waiting for our St. Helens cruise in April.

Next River City Boat Club General Meeting, 11:00 a.m., Saturday March 20, 2010

The March general meeting will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at the Past Commodores’ Cruise at Dolphin Yacht Club.

Past Commodores’ Cruise to Dolphin Yacht Club, Camas/Washougal, March 19-21.

This special annual cruise is hosted by the Past Commodores. Their club-furnished entree for Saturday night is prime rib. Al and Sharon Clute will host the Sunday breakfast. (Since this particular cruise through the years has included Sunday breakfast by Al and Sharon, this reporter is assuming it is again to celebrate their wedding anniversary.)

Master Chefs

Fleet Captain Brian Norske has asked for a response from club members by Tuesday afternoon, so Tuesday at 5 p.m. he can get out the final list of who is coming, what each is bringing to supplement the Saturday prime rib dinner, and to supplement the Sunday breakfast by the Clutes. The list also includes whether arriving by boat or by car (or RV).

Breakfast

There will be a book exchange on Saturday—Jim and Aileen Lee have a bag full of books they are bringing. This is starting to be another annual affair.

Some notes from Brian’s messages—Boats will be moored at the Camas/Washougal dock. There is NOT electricity available on the dock, as the dock rebuilding/renovation is behind schedule. We will meet for the cruise at the Dolphin YC clubhouse and can meet inside or out—“the outside patio is a great place to chat, share snacks, and watch the river.”

Polar Bear Cruise to Hadley’s Landing, February 19-21 (Thank you Judi Matheis!)

“It appears that we may have to change the name of the Polar Bear cruise since the past few years it has been anything but cold! Honest Al brought out his thermometer and it showed low 80’s. The Clutes and Matheis arrived on Thursday with Sharon and Judi rummaging through their arsenal of clothes to find something cool to wear.

Friday we all went for a walk, then Ron and Al played a round of horseshoes for which Al won by one point. Later that day the Meyers, Querys and Bruce arrived. That night we all hung out on the Querys’ boat where it was nice and warm.
Saturday, the Regans and Beutlers arrived. Those who had their dinghies took a short cruise. Later Brian and Judy and Kim arrived by dinghy and Mark and Dixie arrived on foot. Also present were Milo and Trink, Vinnie and Rosie, Allie, Rex, Reese and Miss Abby, Kula, and Bailey. (Unfortunately, Lucky passed away the week before—he will be missed.)

We were all looking forward to seeing Jim and Aileen since they haven’t been able to attend much during this past year due to needed repairs on their boat. Shortly after they left their moorage they began having trouble with their steering and called for help. Al Query and Andy went to their rescue but the only thing they were able to do was help them back to a dock where they could wait for further repairs.

Saturday some people went for a stroll while others visited on the dock, enjoying the warm weather. That night everyone returned to the Querys’ boat for warmth and conversation. For the Querys the warmth was short lived, their furnace stopped working during the night and they woke to 45 degrees. The Regans also woke to frost on their windows. We might have had warm weather during the days but it got pretty cold during the night.

One by one, everyone left on Sunday morning, returning to their moorage, and looking forward to our next cruise.”

Commodore’s Ball, February 24, at Colwood Golf Club

Commodore

The River City Boat Club 2010 Commodore’s Ball, in honor of Commodore Andy Meyer and First Mate Nancy Meyer, was an evening of good food, conversation, and entertainment. Nearly all the River City Boat Club members were in attendance. Also, prior members Rand and Kathy Robinson, Roger and Judy Crystal, and Bill and Maurine Otos attended. It was great seeing them!

memories

The tables and podium were decorated with pieces of fabric with the design of many nautical flags (this appeared to be the same as on the invitations). The certerpieces also included a clever decoration—it was a clear glass with a candle in the bottom that was covered with many turquoise oval pieces of plastic. The glass was set on a base of circled nautical rope. Rope was also tied around the center of the glass.

2010

The 2009 year’s awards were presented—Skipper of the Year went to Andy Meyer, First Mate of the Year to Nancy Meyer, and Commodore’s Award to Andy Meyer.

Commdore Andy Meyer gave a speech. He said a goal for the year will be to have a special activity at each cruise. He welcomed Brian Norske back into the River City Boat Club and especially to his 2010 role as Fleet Captain. Andy also has a goal of five new families into the RCBC this year.

OOPS

Brian Norske also gave a speech. He said the River City Boat Club has a Bent Prop Award, a Pink Snorkel Award, and now a Paddle Oar Award. The Fleet Captain will have the final judgement for the Paddle Oar Award.

The special entertainer was Russ Peak, an award-winning member of the Society of American Magicians and a favorite of TV and Hollywood’s Magic Castle. Russ Peak’s postcard says his presentations are guaranteed to be high-energy, full of audience participation, and packed with laughs. This is all true. Everyone enjoyed his presentations.

watch out

Wendell took many pictures, especially for the website and for the club yearbook.

more

Although the official evening was over following Russ Peak’s presentations, many stayed for awhile talking. It was a fun and entertaining evening—Thank you Carole Regan for all your hard work to make the evening a fun one to remember.

Thank you Al Query and Andy Meyer for coming to the rescue of Tall Tales2 on Friday, February 19.

First Mate Aileen Lee did not realize how much trouble Tall Tales2 was in until she heard Jim yell out we needed help. Aileen got on the phone and called about four or five of the RCBC men. No answers. Then she tried Nancy Meyer, and heard, “help is coming.” Al Query and Andy Meyer soon came in their dinghies. Aileen did not realize Jim had already called the Coast Guard. Soon Vessel Assist also came. They arrived about the time Al and Andy were pulling Tall Tales2 into a dock. Al and Andy went down into the engines space and tried to fix whatever was wrong. (Vessel Assist hung around for awhile, but actually did not assist with anything.) Al and Andy finally gave up and Jim drove Tall Tales2 on one engine to the inside ramp at Big Oak so that Channel Marine could check for the problem. Al Query followed along to Big Oak to help dock Tall Tales2 while Andy tied his dinghy on and rode with Jim to Big Oak. Once docked at Big Oak, Andy took Jim back to his moorage so he could get his van. After Jim drove the van to Big Oak he was able to get the other engine started. He then realised Al and Andy had gotten the problem fixed. Channel Marine on Monday checked out for problems and found nothing and moved Tall Tales2 back to its moorage.

Highlights from the River City Boat Club December 6, 2009, Christmas Party, written by Carole Regan

The RCBC Christmas party was hosted by Mark and Mary Beutler at their lovely home in Gladstone. They have a fabulous view of the river. If it hadn’t been so cold, it would have been tempting to just jump off the deck into the water!

Dinner was delicious, with lots of goodies as always. I can safely say no one went hungry (although Miss Abigail was making a pretty good case.)

The gift exchange included glass/metal hanging lanterns, wood ornaments, boat bag, cribbage board, shop vac., thermal casserole dishes, cocoa set, scarves, knife set, fleece blanket, life-ring clock, apron/towels/cutting board, motorcycle model/statue, electric candles, and a very cute large ceramic fish.

Most of our members were able to attend with the exception of Jim & Nikki and Jim & Aileen. John and Linda Grow joined us for the festivities as well as Brian Norske’s friend Judy.
