In case you are wondering who was the first RCBC member to receive this special award, just ask Secretary Aileen Lee for the story.

Highlights of the RCBC Cruise to Hadley’s Landing, July 1-4, 2011

Thursday, Andy & Sharon Clute with cat Trink arrived in Mosey Cat and Andy & Nancy Meyer and dogs Rosie, Vinny, and Marty arrived in Dream Boat. Jim & Aileen and dog Klondike arrived in Tall Tales2 on Saturday and were tied up at Hadley’s Landing by 11:15 a.m. It was sunny bright and the water level was down quite a bit, although trees on Sauvie Island were still growing in the water. Most of the floatsam was on the Sauvie Island shoreline. Black cows were grazing on the Sauvie Island bank. By the time Tall Tales2 got to Hadley’s, Mt. St. Helens was beautiful in the distance. Soon the Clutes and Meyers and the Meyers’ three dogs were off on a walk. They all, including dogs, had to go down a plank and a log to get on Sauvie Island. Klondike wouldn’t do it.

Jet skiers were going by fast and Al Clute blew his loud whistle as a reminder to slow down.

By 2 p.m. hors d’oeuvres were put out. Then Brian Norske & Jori Walker and dogs Mia and Cooper arrived in Chrisalys and then Bruce Kern and a friend Ryan arrived in Sound of Music. By three p.m. three dinghies with Jim, Al, and Andy went for ice for coolers.

By 5 p.m. the guys and Sharon were out on the dock talking. Who is that in swimming? Of course, it was Brian.

Dinner was delayed until 7 p.m. Hosts were Andy & Nancy and the club furnished entrée was hamburgers and cheeseburgers with side dishes of rotini salad, potato salad, baked beans, apple pie, and strawberry shortcake.

Before that, Jim walked down the plank and into the last step of water and forced Klondike to walk down the plank and walk through water. Bruce had to help Klondike back onto the dock. Jori headed over to the area with Mia and Cooper and Brian dinghied over to pick up Jori and the two dogs.

By 8:50 p.m. there was a beautiful sunset—a cloud layer with sun shining below.

Sunday was cloudy and the day of the mosquitoes. By 9:30 a.m. the dogs were walked. Klondike was dinghied to shore.

At 11:34 a.m., three dinghies and five guys were off to Rocky Pointe to look for Tall Tales2’s dinghy’s seat in the Lees’ van. It wasn’t there. Later, Aileen found it hiding along the wall in the bow of the cabin of Tall Tales2’s bow. Aileen also found a banner in the bow that she gave to Brian. It said, “River City Boat Club Welcomes You..” Not sure how long it had been there!

By 12:30 p.m the sun started to come out. By 1:30 the hors d’oeuvres were put out. By 2;30 Jim and Al were playing cards on Mosey Cat. Aileen visited with Sharon and then went to check on Klondike. She found she had to put on the air as the cabin was getting too warm. Rosie and Vinny were running running under the deck chairs—they didn’t like the waves. Finally the water was calm. Kayakers were going by. There were fishermen at the end of the dock.

Some of Willamette Yacht Club were docked at the downstream end of the dock. We all played a peanuts game. We shared dinner with them. Al & Sharon were hosts for us and fixed barbecued ribs. Willamette Club had steaks. The rest of dinner included wonderful salads, baked potatoes, strawberries and blueberries, lemon meringue pie, brownies and cookies. What a feast! Both clubs sat in chairs around a campfire.

Monday dogs were walked—Klondike was dinghied across the channel to a boat ramp. Generators were going. By 11:00 boats were starting to leave, but not ours. Some of our group went off by dinghy to Rocky Pointe for ice & to Fred’s Moorage (not sure which when.)

About three p.m. hors d’oeuvres were put out and it turned out more like lunch—much good food. It even included strawberry cupcakes and lemon meringue pie.

By 5 p.m. most boats were leaving. The water was choppy and it was quite windy. By 6:15 p.m.Tall Tales2 was back at Rocky Pointe and its head was emptied and the boat was in its slip. The weather was hot but breezy.

Hosts for the 4th of July Hadley’s Landing Cruise for Saturday night, July 2, are Andy & Nancy Meyer. For the Club-furnished Entrée for Saturday night, Andy & Nancy plan on hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Hosts for Sunday, July 3, are Al & Sharon Clute. For the club-furnished entrée they plan to have barbecued ribs. If you have not notified them that you will be there, please contact them immediately, so they will know when to look for you and know the numbers who will be at dinner Saturday and Sunday nights. Hors d’oeuvres time for Saturday and Sunday will be at 1:00 p.m.

From the Secretary

“The River City Boat Club BoatUS Cooperating Group Agreement has been renewed. This allows RCBC members to get BoatUS dues at 1/2 price and receive other benefits. I have applications for those who do not have an application and wish to apply. Please remember that we need to have the club liaison and at least four members belong to BoatUS.”

Highlights of the RCBC Cruise to Coon Island, East Dock, June 10-12, 2011 .

It is certainly a different year for boating. There was water everywhere, not just in the main part of Multnomah Channel. There was lots of floatsam in the Channel. It was windy and cold. Tall Tales2 with Jim & Aileen Lee and Klondike arrived at the Coon Island East Dock at 6:12 p.m. on Friday. They found the docks had been replaced and were very nice. The weather was cloudy bright. So far, the only RCBC boat there was Mosey Cat with Al & Sharon Clute. Commodore Brian Norske and Jori Walker and Jori’s two small dogs, Mia & Cooper, arrived at 7:22 p.m. Brian’s boat, a 30 foot SeaRay Sundancer, is called Chrisalys, although it still says on it, Ramblin Fever III, from Rage River, NC. Jori’s two small dogs sported Paws Aboard life jackets. The dogs are really cute—Cooper has blue eyes!

Coon Island turned out to be quite different from normal. Just getting the dogs onto Coon Island was a chore—the ramp at the shore was straight down. Water on the island was everywhere, even surrounding the out-house. There were still paths, but not sure useful they were.

On Saturday the boats docked at the East Dock rocked and rolled as fishermen went by in their boats. Besides the few RCBC boats, there was a sailboat, minus a sail (in the sailboat was a man and his pug) and there was a good sized cruiser (60 feet maybe?)—the family included two small boys. Saturday morning it was nearly 10 a.m. when Brian appeared wearing no shoes or shirt, in spite of the cold weather. Soon after that the sun came breaking through the clouds. Misdirection with Bill Regan and dog Allie arrived at 11:25 a.m.

By 12:30 noon Saturday, RCBC members gathered on the dock for hors d’oeuvres. It was now breezy and sunny. Tales were being told–dog stories, car stories, and more, and of course boating tales, and a new topic–what qualifies as a mammal? There were 4 dogs and 7 people on the dock. By 4:30, the men helped Brian put Brian’s new dinghy together. Dogs Allie and Klondike inspected the event, and of course, advice came from all the men.

Brian and Jori hosted the dinner. The club furnished entrée was steak and baked potatoes. The rest of the dinner was potato salad and lettuce salad, vegies, apple pie and cookies. What a feast, as always! Everyone sat at tables on the dock, although it was still windy and cold. Afterwards, the group gathered on Mosey Cat. The moon was out. Bill Regan fixed Smores for Al Clute, Jim Lee, Aileen Lee, and himself. The dogs were walked at 10:10 p.m. and then all was quiet.

Sunday morning, the dogs were walked about 10:00 a.m., and then the RCBCers were standing on the dock talking. It was cloudy bright and the water was calm. By 11:00 a.m., all had left. There was some jetsam, and some fishermen, and then the water became ripply and there was more debris. Wonder how long it will take for Multnomah Channel’s water level to drop! Trees along Sauvie Island seemed to be growing in the Channel, and ramps seemed to go down to land rather than up.

The June RCBC Cruise is to Coon Island, East Dock, June 10-12

Hosts for the Coon Island, East Dock, cruise are Brian Norske and Jori Walker. When asked, Brian suggested steak for the club-furnished entrée for Saturday night. Not sure if that is what he decided on. Contact him if you need to know or check the Fleet Captain’s E-mails. If you plan to attend, please contact Mark or Mary with your time of arrival, how many in your party, and the potluck item you will bring for Saturday night. Also, remember that hors d’oeuvres time on Saturdays and Sundays at cruises is now 1:00 p.m.

Change of Location of 4th of July Cruise

This cruise location has been changed to North Portland Harbor (below RR bridge) and is hosted by Doug and Teri Brown. Watch for the next Searayder and for E-mails from Mark & Mary Beutler for the details.

From the Secretary

“I will soon be renewing the RCBC BoatUS Cooperating Group Agreement. This allows RCBC members to get BoatUS dues at 1/2 price and receive other benefits. We need to have the club liaison and at least four members join or renew their membership in BoatUS. I have the applications if you are not a member and will have extra copies of several of their publications.”

Highlights of the Memorial Weekend Cruise to Sand Island, May 27-30. (Thank you, Mary Beutler for being the reporter for this cruise.)

On Thursday, The Clutes, The Meyers (and their three dogs), and Marilyn Town & Barrett Coughlan arrived at Sand Island. The weather was rainy and members stayed on their own boats and did their own thing.

Friday, Jim & Sandy Seyler arrived at noon, and Mark & Mary Beutler and the three dogs arrived at 2:00 p.m. The weather was overcast but no rain. The water was extremely high and the ramps were level walking to the island. Mark and Mary brought the new canopy for the docks so if it rained, they were under cover. “It was very funny watching the guys put it up!!! Too many captains!!!!! But once it was up we were safe from the rain.” Dinner was “no host” that evening and everyone afterwards went on to Mark and Mary’s boat to visit.

Saturday turned out to be a beautiful sunny day and everyone certainly enjoyed it. There were appetizers on the dock under the “Big Top.” Mark, Jim, and Andy went for a long Tender ride up the Lewis River. Andy said they went farther than they ever could go before due to the high water. Andy and Nancy were the hosts Saturday evening. Their pulled pork was very good along with all the side dishes. Marilyn made the BEST DESSERT EVER!!!!!

Sunday: On this day the weatherman said it was to be the best day for the weekend! When Mary wrote this on Sunday, they were still looking for the sun to come out, but said on the good side, it hadn’t rained yet! Dinner was early as Barrett & Marilyn, and Jim & Sandy were leaving early. Hosts Mark & Mary served Wisconsin Brats and there were many side dishes, plus appetizers for dinner. Brian Norske & Jori Walker arrived by car at 3 p.m., and Andy went to get them by dinghy. Mary wrote they were getting ready to play bean bag baseball—Andy had built the bean bag baseball game in his shop. The NOTS Boat Club was also at Sand Island and were invited to join RCBC in playing the game.

Mary wrote that the Bean Bag Baseball game was a BLAST!!!! Mark made “4” amazing home runs!!!! “Sad to say, Nancy, Jori, and Mary were on the opposing team, all and all it was fun! Thank you Andy for making it all happen!” They went back to the boats, had dessert and visited with Brian & Jori before Mark took them back to shore in the dinghy. About 8:30 p.m., they headed up to shore (Sand Island) to join the NOTS Boat Club for Smores and a bon-fire. “It was a very enjoyable day!!!!”

On Monday, the sun came out so Mark & Mary and the three dogs went for a dinghy ride up the Channel. When they returned, they went to visit their new friends from NOTS Boat Club to say goodbye! “They are such a friendly group of people and have invited RCBC to join them any time they are on the river!!!!

“Capping it off…..It was a “Grand Week-end”!!!!

Highlights of St. Helens City Dock Cruise, April 8-10

Tall Tales2, with Jim & Aileen Lee and dog Klondike, left Rocky Pointe about noon, Friday, April 8. The water was flat and there were some clouds on the edges of the sky. There were some heavy clouds appearing downstream. There was some floatsam in Multnomah Channel, as well as a few fishermen. There were some old birds nests on Sauvie Island as well as some bird houses on posts in the water and on Sauvie Island. A snowy Mt. St. Helens was beautiful. Tall Tales2 was going slow, and passed some barges anchored, one the Polar Star from Seattle, and some sea gulls on logs by the mill at St. Helens. It was now windy and the water ripply. Tall Tales2 was all tied up at the St. Helens City Dock by 3:50 p.m. Al & Denise Query arrived by car. Al helped Jim get the Tall Tales2’s roof back up.

Al & Sharon Clute with cat Trink arrived by Mosey Cat on Thursday. Andy & Nancy and three dogs (Rosie, Vinny, & Marty) arrived by Dream Boat Friday afternoon. Jim & Sandy Seyler arrived by Safari Friday. Mark & Mary Beutler and three dogs (Reese, Rex, & Miss Abbie) arrived on Reflections on Friday.

Arriving on Saturday by car were Brian Norske & Jori Walker. Bruce Kern came with Brian & Jori.

Friday night Rich & Ann Mason walked over about five p.m. , from their home nearby. As always, it was good to see them.

Going to the Klondike restaurant in St. Helens for dinner Friday night were Andy & Nancy, Al & Sharon, Al & Denise, Jim & Sandy, & Jim & Aileen, The Meyers’ dog Vinny fell into the water, assume it was trying to jump from Dream Boat to the dinghy. After returning from the Klondike everyone was invited onto Safari for a card game of “Apples to Apples.”

Saturday morning the dogs were all walked. The sky was cloudy and it seemed cold at 51 degrees. Dogs Rex and Reese were dinghied over to Sand Island to run. The guys were helping Jim Lee get the motor on Tall Tales2’s dinghy. A guy appeared on the dock and offered Andy Meyer $5 to dingy him to Sand Island. Later, three of the RCBC guys and two dogs were off in three dinghies. By 11:30 a.m Saturday there were only 5 boats on the inner dock (downstream part) , all RCBC boats.

A “whoops,”—the FleetCaptain had his club burgee with the yellow on the bottom and the blue on the top. Wonder what that means?
By noon, the sun was beginning to come through the windows of Tall Tales2. Jim & Sandy Seyler left. The Book Exchange bag was put out about 2 p.m. A group was gathered on Dream Boat and the talk was mostly on dog stories. The sun was covered by clouds by dinnertime and it was cold.

The RCBC dinner was at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The barbecued spare ribs prepared by Mark & Mary were delicious. This was supplemented by salads, including coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, Texas bread, cookies, and cream pie. It was a wonderful RCBC dinner, as always.

It rained all night Saturday night. Dogs were walked Sunday morning. By 12:30 p.m., all RCBC boats were gone. Dream Boat and Tall Tales2 stopped at the St. Helens Marina gas dock. There were a few fishermen in boats on Multnomah Channel. The Channel water was choppy. There were not many boats on the Channel. By 3:57 p.m., Tall Tales2 had its head emptied and was into its slip.

Highlights of Polar Bear Cruise, February 18-20, 2011

At first it appeared that the total members at this cruise would be six and the total dogs would be seven. On Saturday, when Commodore Brian Norske and Jori Walker arrived by dinghy taxi, the total number of people increased to eight and the total dogs remaiined at seven.

The following is written by Jim Lee:

“Andy helped Jim get Tall Tales2’s gen set going. Carb was dried out and after much huffing and blowing, he got gas to the carb and it started ok. After Andy left to get Nancy, the dogs, and his boat, Jim backed out of the slip, lost control, and ran into rocks on the shore side of the moorage. This caused damage to the outdrive and props—Went on the cruise anyway.

Jim walked Klondike Saturday a.m. The docks were all covered with ice. On the way back, Jim couldn’t keep his footing and slid down the ramp from shore to the main dock. Because of age and asundry things, he couldn’t get upright off of the dock. Fortunately, Mark saw him lying on the dock and he went to help. He had to borrow a chair from Andy and then they both came to Jim’s aid. Jim appreciated all their help in getting upright again. Many, many thanks, again!”

More about the Polar Bear Cruise:

Saturday during the day, boat cleaning was going on. The first dinghy run of the season happened—in one dinghy were the Fleet Captain and two dogs, and in the other, Andy and Jim.

12:30 p.m. on Saturday there was sun, but it was cold. The frost on the dock was gone and the front windows of Tall Tales2 were almost dry. Klondike disappeared iinto the bed area below the table, probably because he didn’t get to go on the dinghy ride.

3:39 p.m. Mark and Andy were back from dog walking. The next chore was to clean mud from shoes and dog feet. (Friday night when walking Klondike, Jim and Aileen had found out the mud on shore was very slippery.) At 3:50 p.m. it was 77 degrees in the cabin of Tall Tales2. Before 4:30 p.m., the men were conversing, gathered on the dock in deck chairs. The sun was still out and some clouds were gathering to the South. At 4:40 p.m., all withdrew on to Dream Boat due to a cool breeze. It was 82 degrees in Tall Tales2’s cabin (all of this without the gen set since Tall Tales2 was low on gas.) At 5 p.m. Rex and Reece were running up and down the dock. At 5:15 p.m., the sun was setting behind the hill across Multnomah Channel and the clouds were creeping up the channel.

Following dinner on the boats, all gathered on Reflections to share a pie and talk..

Sunday, Dream Boat followed Tall Tales2 to Rocky Pointe Marina to help Jim get docked close to the boat lift.

Does this Polar Bear Cruise remind anyone of earlier Polar Bear Cruises? For Aileen it does as because of one of them long ago–she was the first member awarded the placque for the Pink Snorkle Award, the placque that has made the rounds many times since.

Highlights from Down River Cruise, September 2010, written by Judi Matheis

    (Thanks, Judi!!!)

The River City Down River Cruise began Thursday, September 2, with the arrival of Mosey Cat, Capt Ron, and Dream Boat at Sand Island docks. The weather was sunny and calm.

Arriving on Friday were Reflections, Brian Norske, and UPOP. Ron and Andy attempted to dinghy the Lewis River but the water was so low they had to return. That night the wind and waves kicked up so hard they were spraying over the back of Reflections. Some were rocked to sleep, not so gently, that night.

Bill and Carole arrived by vehicle and were brought to Sand Island by Andy. After hors d’oeuvres, a brief general meeting was held. Then everyone participated in a game of bean bag softball, provided by Ron and Judi, hosts for the day. After dinner of Tacos and other delicious food items Andy returned Bill and Carole to land. Doug and Teri arrived shortly after dinner.

Sunday, after hors d’oeuvres, there was another game of bean bag softball since it was such a success the day before. The OOPS award goes to the Beutlers, owners of Rex and Reese, when one of the dogs peed on Brian’s foot–everyone but Brian found that funny.

Sunday dinner of pasta was provided by Nancy and Andy. This was again accompanied by delicious side dishes.

Monday, some continued to Cathlamet while others returned home. Traveling to Cathlamet on calm water and the outgoing tide were Capt Ron, Mosey Cat, Reflections, and Dream Boat. Traveling by land were Jim and Nikki in their motor home and Sharon’s brother, sister, and her niece, also by RV. While having hors d’oeuvres, Mark (assume MacNamara) and Ron provided margaritas. That night instead of having Mac’s world famous hamburgers, all enjoyed his world famous steaks and other side dishes.

Tuesday, Ron and Judi, Mark and Dixie, and Mark and Mary all went for a bike ride to Wahkiakum Island in the morning and a dinghy ride through the channel of the island while Al and Sharon enjoyed their family.

Wednesday, continuing the Down River Cruise, Capt Ron, UPOP, and Reflections arrived at Ilwaco. Jim and Nikki returned home while Mosey Cat and Dream Boat remained in Cathlamet.

Thursday, those in Ilwaco took a bike ride over the mountain and along the beach to Long Beach. Once back to the docks Mark Buetler took his dinghy out to do some fishing and returned back with sea bass and crab, which were accompanied with chicken, pasta, and green beans for dinner. Then the meal was topped off with blackberry cobbler and ice cream.

Friday, Ron and Judi and Mark and Dixie took a bike ride to Long Beach while Mark B. returned to the sea and returned with more crabs. That evening they watched some slow drags and then retreated to UPOP where they enjoyed Mac’s world famous spaghetti and peach cobbler and ice cream.

Before leaving on Saturday, they all browsed Saturday Market. Reflections returned home while UPOP and Capt Ron returned to Cathlamet. Before dinner, they took a dinghy ride through the channel to Skamokawa.

By Sunday, everyone was home. It had been a great cruise, everyone enjoyed themselves and all the food provided.

The Next River City Boat Club General Meetings

The September RCBC general meeting will be a short meeting held this Saturday (September 4), on the dock at the Sand Island part of the Down River Cruise. The September 22, the fourth Wednesday, at Buffalo Gap Saloon & Eatery, has been cancelled due to several members being out of town.

The October RCBC general meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 13, the second Wednesday, at the Attic at Buffalo Gap Saloon & Eatery, 6835 SW Macadam Avenue. The Social half-hour is at 6:30 p.m. and dinner and the meeting at 7:00 p.m. The Nominating Committee report will be given at the October 13 meeting.

Cruise to Sand Island part of Down River Cruise, September 3 to 6, 2010

This River City Boat Club Labor Day Weekend Cruise has two hosted nights. Saturday night will be hosted by Ron & Judi Matheis. They plan on tacos for the club-furnished entrée. They also plan on an activity—a bean bag softball game. Sunday night will be hosted by Andy & Nancy Meyer. They plan on pasta for the club-furnished entrée.

Another hosted meal has been added for those who are going Down River on Monday. Mark and Dixie McNamara are planning on barbecuing “World Famous Burgers” in Cathlamet. Sounds like this hosted meal will be Monday night. This could change to Tuesday depending when the boats arrive at Cathlamet. Mark and Dixie are calling this event a “hoe down.” For more info on that part of the cruise, contact Mark and Dixie.
